Description:

The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is seeking a highly motivated Biomedical Intern to join AHRI's Clinical Laboratory department based at AHRI-Durban campus. The Biomedical Intern will be responsible for assisting in a broad range of biorepository activities at the AHRI Durban Laboratory needed to manage the life cycle of biological specimens. Duties include receiving, processing, distribution, retrieval and storage of biospecimens. Additional duties include biospecimen inventory management, preparation of specimen kits, maintenance of study specific documentation and quality control checks of physical and electronic laboratory records, forms and documents.

• Assist with day-to-day activities involving biospecimen receiving, processing, distribution, storage and retrieval for various studies being conducted by AHRI.
• Enter and maintain sample information into the laboratory’s data management system for all relevant associated data, cold storage location, aliquots and distribution.
• Assist with preparation of kits for specimen collection.
• Assist with logistical co-ordination of specimens from clinical sites to the Clinical Laboratory and from the Clinical Laboratory to other internal and external laboratories.
• Document management (electronic and hard copy).
• General housekeeping and maintenance of laboratory, cryogenic equipment and facilities.
• Storage and inventory management of specimens in the Biorepository.
• Retrieval of specimens and preparation of shipments of specimens- both locally and internationally.
• Compliance with Health and Safety and Company policies and procedures as well as GCLP/ISO15189 requirements.
• Assist with preparation of work instruction, SOPs and other study related documents.
• Assist with other laboratory related tasks as required and directed by her line manager or other senior managers in the laboratory.
• Work across sites as/when required.

Minimum Qualifications

• BSc Hons/BTech degree or equivalent in a Life sciences field.
• Highly proficient with computers with working knowledge of MS Office.

Minimum Experience

• Not applicable

Knowledge and Abilities

• Knowledge of the scientific research processes.

Advantageous

• GCLP or ISO15189 certification will be advantageous.
• Experience working on the laboratory information management system.
• Experience in a clinical research laboratory setting would be advantageous.
• PBMC processing techniques.
• Experience working with ultra-low temperature storage equipment and facilities.
